Why Watch A Christmas Carol

Charles Dickens’ timeless tale about a bitter old man who has a change of heart has been endlessly adapted since it first appeared at Christmas in 1843. Visionary author Jack Thorne aims to heighten the story’s hallucinatory aspect with an unexpected pang of psychological depth. Warchus’ production effectively uses all resources at their disposal, turning this dream-like fantasy into an all inclusive experience. Christopher Nightingale’s music adds the cheer to the play. Seizing the opportunity the title provides, the play is adorned with cherished carols, including classics like “Joy to the World,” “Silent Night” and “It Came Upon the Midnight Clear.”

Starring Campbell Scot as Ebenezer Scrooge, the play will also feature Tony Award-winner Rob Howell’s (The Ferryman, Matilda) scenic and costume design, lighting design by Tony winner Hugh Vanstone (Hillary and Clinton, Matilda), and sound design by Tony nominee Simon Baker (Girl from the North Country, Matilda).

The Story

On a bitter Christmas Eve night, a cold-hearted miser is visited by four ghosts. Thus follows a moral lesson on divisions found within a social structure and the true meaning of Christmas. Transported to a world of past, present, and future, Ebenezer Scrooge witnesses what a lifetime of fear and selfish deeds have led to.

The story weaves around the Ghost of Christmas Past, Christmas Present and Christmas Yet to Come, who together spark a dramatic change in the bitter old-man.
