Why Watch Ain’t Too Proud

A charismatic revival of The Temptations’ most breathtaking dance moves and vocals, Ain’t Too Proud is sure to be one of the best musicals at Broadway this year. From the ‘60s outfits to the flawless performance, the talented cast consisting of Derrick Baskin, James Harkness, and Jeremy Pope among others, resonates with classic R&B culture like never before. The show also explores ideas of friendship and morality in an America that was not quite liberal and tolerant as it is today. Tony Award-winning director Des McAnuff hits all the right notes with this musical, adding it to his collection of successful Broadway musicals such as Big River, The Who’s Tommy, and Jersey Boys. Ain’t Too Proud is an adaptation of Dominique Morisseau’s best-selling book about the band and its early struggles.

The Story

Set during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, Ain’t Too Proud follows the familiar story of the sensational Detroit-based band that produced a whopping 42 songs that made it into the ‘Top Ten Hits’, 14 of which reached the top spot at various points in time. The group, which initially consisted of songwriting legends Smokey Robinson and Norman Whitfield alongside singers Eddie Kendricks and David Ruffin, plunges headfirst into the struggle for equality. With hit songs like ‘Ball of Confusion’ and ‘Papa was a Rolling Stone’, the musical takes audiences on a wild journey into the world of one of America’s finest bands.
