Several names, one attraction! Maine-Montparnasse Tower – Tour Maine-Montparnasse – Tour Montparnasse; it is an office skyscraper situated in Paris’ Montparnasse region. Named after the Greek mountain Mount Parnassus, this building is the only skyscraper in Paris. Built between 1969 and 1973, the Montparnasse Tower was the tallest structure in the entire country until the completion of Tour First in 2011. As of 2019, the Montparnasse Tower is officially the nineteenth tallest structure in the European Union. Louis Hoym, Urbain Cassan and Eugene Beaudouin designed the Tower, and Campenon Bernard constructed it. With an unbelievable height of 689 feet, you can easily catch sight of it from great distances. The Tower may not be in every tourist’s bucket list, but it is an unorthodox experience you should choose. It remains open till late at night, and you can access it any time with an all-day access ticket.
Visit a building that once caused construction ban
The Montparnasse Tower is often criticised as the ugliest building in the capital. Nevertheless, it is the third tallest building in France. Its new-age, black look is a contradiction to the grand Parisian ambience. Upon its completion, Paris had banned the construction of structures above seven stories. However, the ban was lifted for the Tower, and it is undoubtedly something to marvel at. The Montparnasse Tower has fifty-nine floors, with most of them being offices. On the fifty-sixth floor is the Le Ciel de Paris restaurant. It offers a warm and luxurious setting; the handiwork of Noe Duchaufour-Lawrance. If you happen to dine here, expect amazing views through the floor-to-ceiling windows.
Breath-taking views of Paris from the Tower
Perhaps the most obvious fact about the Montparnasse Tower is that it offers brilliant vistas of the capital. At 210 metres above the ground, Paris looks fantastic! You can get excellent views from the restaurant, a bar or from its highest viewpoint – the rooftop. The structure stands directly opposite to the Eiffel Tower, giving a view of the Iron Lady like no other. You can also enjoy a picturesque 360-degree view of the capital, with almost a range of forty kilometres on a clear sunny day.
The indoor observation deck on the fifty-sixth floor also provides excellent views. But you may also take the stairs to the open-air deck on the fifty-ninth floor. Either way, you are in for a beautiful Parisian treat. You can practically see the whole of Paris. Staring at you is the famous Eiffel Tower. Then, as you turn right, you will slowly catch sights of the Grand Palais, Arc de Triomphe, the Louvre, the Sacre-Coeur, the dome of Invalides, and the Notre Dame. The tall building of la Defense on your left appears even more magnificent as they peek from above the giant park of the Bois de Boulogne. The Montparnasse Tower may be underrated, but it is an experience to not miss in Paris.
