Stonehenge: a marvel of the ancient world

Stonehenge is one of the best-known wonders of the world. With a lack of written records, the reason for its creation remains unclear and is the subject of much speculation. Immerse yourself in the history of this pre-historic attraction and learn more on a half-day Stonehenge tour.

Stonehenge is in Wiltshire, England, near the town of Amesbury. It is a ring of standing stones, each weighing around twenty-five tonnes. The stones stand approximately thirteen feet high and seven feet wide. Archaeologists believe the structure is over five thousand years old. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Stonehenge and its surroundings are one of the UK’s most famous landmarks. While the National Trust owns the surrounding land, the British Crown owns the monument, and the English Heritage manages it.

Learn the story of Stonehenge

Built in several stages, scientists believe Stonehenge took at least fifteen hundred years to complete, undergoing many changes to its original architecture over time. According to radiocarbon dating, the circular earth bank and ditch is the oldest part of the structure, built around 3100 BC. The first stones came later, raised between 2400 and 2200 BC. They were rearranged over the following centuries, and new stones were added. The Stonehenge we see today was created sometime between 1930 and 1600 BC.

Many theories surround the purpose of this strange and unique monument, which remains engulfed in mystery to this day. One prevailing theory comes from 18th-Century scholars, based on the position of the monument’s entrance, which faces the rising sun during the summer solstice. For many, Stonehenge’s orientation suggests that ancient astronomers possibly used it as a solar calendar to track the movement of the sun and moon. Human bones unearthed during recent excavations, however, support another theory – that Stonehenge may have been an ancient burial ground built to honour the dead.

Despite extensive research, the builders of Stonehenge remain unknown, and some even suggest the work of aliens behind it!  Take the Stonehenge tour to learn more about its possible uses and origin.
