Why Watch The Lehman Trilogy

The Lehman Trilogy is an ambitious play that spans an astonishing 150 years of history condensed into a 3-hour masterpiece. Previous productions of the same story have employed a large number of performers, but this play features just three wonderful actors who are known for their stunning performances. They switch roles and genders during the play with brilliant ease and depict each character to absolute perfection. Director Sam Mendes expertly paints a vivid picture of the unfortunate events that finally led to the financial crash of 2008, an event that had global consequences.

Perhaps what is most fascinating about the play is the way it presents the American Dream to its audiences. The way the idea evolved and morphed over the generations is presented in an interesting manner through the 3-hour long performance. This is a show you simply cannot miss this season.

The Story

The piece follows the story of three generations of the Lehman Family. The three Lehman brothers travel from Bavaria to America in the 1840s and begin by opening a humble general store in Montgomery, Alabama. As the years roll by, the family begins to buy and resell cotton, eventually expanding into coffee, banking, and the railway business.

The Lehman corporation slowly blooms into an empire that becomes renowned for its sheer financial power in the mid-20th century. When a shift of power in 1960s leads to the creation of a trading division that is handled by non-family members, the downfall of the Lehman business empire is set in motion.
